My First RTR Experience

in Designer for Less,Weddings

This past weekend, we were in Michigan for a friend’s wedding. Even though I was bummed about not getting to dress up for Halloween, I was really excited about the dress I rented for the wedding. Yes, I rented a dress.

We’ve had a string of weddings to attend lately, and as much as I love clothes and shopping, the last thing I wanted to do was buy another wedding guest dress that wouldn’t get enough use to justify the money I would spend on it. And I tend to tire of things that I don’t get to wear often.

Our friend’s fall wedding was the perfect opportunity for me to try out Rent the Runway. If you haven’t heard about this ingenious site, read one of my previous posts here. After browsing through beautiful dresses from over 95 designers, I decided to reserve the Mark and James by Badgley Mischka “That’s So Fringe” dress for the weekend. I loved the draping, the fringe detail, and the embellishments along the top. The dress retails for about $690. Thanks to some referral credits, I was able to rent the dress for only $32 (the actual rental price is $75).

Just like ordering anything online, I was worried about fit. But one of the many great things about Rent the Runway is that you can reserve a backup size (a second size of a dress) for free, so fit isn’t too much of a concern. You also don’t have to worry about the dress not arriving on time. Rent the Runway emails you once it ships, and you can track the shipment until it arrives at your doorstep.

The dress was packed in a garment bag with a few other goodies, such as garment tape, that you get to keep. The dress was a perfect fit, so looks like I’ll be saving the garment tape for another time. I don’t know if I just lucked out, or if Rent the Runway is careful with their selection, but the dress was so comfortable. There was nothing itchy, tugging, or restricting about it–so it was great for lots of time on the dance floor.

At the end of the weekend, I put the dress in the pre-paid USPS envelop, dropped it into a blue USPS mailbox, and forgot about it. RTR takes care of the dry-cleaning! It was so fun getting wear something nice without the huge price tag. I can definitely see myself using Rent the Runway many times in the future.
