The Outfit Genie

What should I wear to…so-and-so’s wedding? My date this weekend? Dinner at my in-laws’ house? The office Christmas party? It’s a question that can have many girls standing in their closet, contemplating and trying on many outfits only to come to the realization that you have nothing to wear. If you can’t find anything in your closet, what do you buy? I have a really hard time (yes, believe it or not) going to the mall without a particular ensemble in mind.

Surely you have found yourself in this situation. Hopefully a recent discovery of mine can help you out. Shop Pulse, a UK fashion site, now offers a free personal stylist that will generate complete, personal ensembles for you.

It’s very simple. For the amount of information you need to provide compared to what you will receive from the stylist, this might be one of the best online styling tools I have come across.

Just fill out the form (here) with some basic information: what you are looking for, your height, bust, budget, age, preferred colors, favorite designers, and favorite stores. Then provide your email address, and you’ll have personalized looks to your inbox in a day or two.

The friendly email you’ll receive from your personal stylist will include a URL directing you to the looks she has come up with. In addition to the main garment of the look, the stylist will also include all accessories: purse or clutch, jewelry, and shoes. There are images for each item, along with direct links to purchase from the retailers. While you don’t need to buy the items in the look, it’s easy to find something similar and you might realize you own something along the lines of what they recommend.

I recently used the Shop Pulse Personal Stylist to help find an outfit for a fall wedding in Michigan. The personal stylist even went as far as looking up the weather in Michigan at the time of the wedding, and she incorporated looks (four total) that included jackets. She also wrote detailed descriptions for each look. For example, here is one of the looks and the description that followed:

The first row of clothing and accessories I have chosen are vintage inspired, making them chic and classy. The pleated flapper dress is a copy of one of SJP’s dresses in Sex and the City 2, so you know you are onto something good…The quirky shoes work really well with the style of the dress, and in suede – this season’s hottest shoe fabric – you are sure to make a style impact! I have also sourced a ruffle clutch at a bargin price, an oh-so-cute cropped jacket that will keep you warmer, and a statement black necklace to complete this kooky cool look.

Why it works: It’s free, it’s easy, you receive a response fairly quickly, and you’ll be surprised at how detailed and personalized the response is.

The downside: Prices are in pounds, and all the items featured in the looks are from UK retailers, but many of them ship to the United States.
